Overcoming art block without sacrificing creative momentum.
Is taking a break the only option for creative block ?
Dear Newsletter Subscriber ,
As a fellow creative person, I understand the frustration of hitting a wall in your artistic journey. Whether you are a sculptor, writer, painter, or involved in some other form of creative expression, feeling stuck can be incredibly frustrating. But what if I tell you that hitting the pause button is not your only option?
Embrace Diversity: Pursue Other Interests
When I find myself stuck in sculpting, instead of forcing flow or taking a full stop, I dive into other creative outlets. Here's why it works:
1. Prevents burnout:
Engaging in different activities like painting, sketching or reading can refresh your mind and prevent the burnout that often results from constantly pushing through the same creative block.
2. Inspires new perspectives:
Switching to a different form of art or hobby can provide new insights and inspiration. For example, the techniques, colors and ideas of painting can ignite the spark of a breakthrough in your sculpture work.
3.Maintains creative momentum:
While taking a break from your primary art form, pursuing another interest keeps your creativity going. This way, you stay in a state of creation, making it easier to return to sculpting with fresh energy and ideas.
4. Broadens skill set:
Diversifying your creative pursuits not only rejuvenates your primary passion but also expands your overall skill set. Each discipline offers unique skills and perspectives that can enrich your core craft.
My personal routine:
As a sculptor, there are times when clay doesn’t mold the way I envisioned it. Instead of stepping away from art altogether, I:
Paint: Experimenting with colors and strokes offers a different form of expression and can be incredibly soothing.
Sketch: Drawing helps me refine my ideas and often brings up new concepts for my sculptures.
Read: Books on art, fiction or even different subjects can spark creativity and provide a much-needed mental respite.
Find new hobbies: Trying new activities keeps the excitement going and often has unexpected effects in my work.
I'm not doing all this for perfection, but to keep my creative momentum going, because sometimes it's hard to get back into that flow. And it helps me stay creative.
Finding your balance:
The key is to figure out what works best for you. Identify a few activities that you enjoy and that can serve as creative diversions when needed. Remember, the goal is to stay creatively active without the pressure of your primary art form.
I hope this helps .
Happy creating !
